3 Fun Activities Near Collingwood, Ontario

Just a quick, holiday Monday post here. Hope all of you Ontarians enjoyed some time off with friends and family. For me the whole of July was rough physically and I had looked forward to the start of August. Between some back issues and a broken finger I’ve been unable to drive or paddle and was starting to feel a little stir crazy. My husband kindly drove me and our dog to the southern portion of Georgian Bay on Friday to get me out of the house – about a two hour drive from Toronto. All photos are from my HTC One smartphone as holding my DSLR isn’t comfortable yet.

After driving through the crazy construction that has invaded Collingwood at the foot of the Blue Mountains, we parked in the day use lot of Craigleath Provincial Park and walked part of the Georgian Trail. The trail spans 32 kilometers of old rail bed and is great for getting your cycling or running miles in (yes, I use metric and imperial measurements together a lot).

Before we left the Craigleath  parking lot, we explored the shoreline. The terrier isn’t much of a swimmer so this is as close as he’d go to the water.

Finally, we hadn’t packed a lunch because we knew there were many great towns in the area. We drove the ten minutes to Thornbury and bought a Reuben and a roast beef sandwich from the Thornbury Bakery Café.  As we were so close to the bay, we headed down to the harbor for a peaceful lunch and watched the sailboats come and go from the marina. There may have been Kawartha’s ice cream after that but as there’s no photo evidence, it must not have happened.

All in all, a lovely day out of the city.
