The idea for this trip with two dear, hometown friends (Kellie and Liz) and their daughters (Anna, Maura, and Sadie) came about the same week as May’s Georgian Bay kayak-camping outing. I had posted in Facebook asking if anyone had little girls that they would lend me for Wild Women Expeditions’ Women & Girls canoeContinue reading “Trip Report: Adventures in the Adirondacks”

Day 1: Pre-Trip Preparations in Ithaca
Day 1: Saturday, August 22, 2015 The bulk of our pre-trip preparations were done over the late spring and early summer via e-mail and spreadsheets (it’s me – of course there was a spreadsheet!). I drove down to Ithaca on Friday night to start the weekend of our adventures.
Day 2: Travel Day and Camp Set-Up
Date: Sunday, August 23, 2015 Weather: Sunny and calm. High of 79 degrees Farenheit. Distance: ~3 miles strolling around camp Hooray, travel day finally arrived! After months of talking about it, we were really headed out on a camping trip!
Day 3: Canoe Interludes
Date: Monday, August 24, 2015 Weather: Mix of sun and clouds, afternoon wind. High of 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Distance: ~4 miles We scouted the spot to rent canoes on Sunday night and with Monday afternoon’s forecast looking a little iffy, decided to make an early-ish start.
Day 4: Mount Arab and the Wild Center
Date: Tuesday, August 25, 2015 Weather: Mix of sun and clouds. High of 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Distance: ~4.5 miles Huzzah! The girls slept soundly overnight and the adults didn’t fare too badly either. Perfect start to our ‘wild’ land-based adventures planned for the day.
Day 5: Last Day in Camp
Date: Wednesday, August 26, 2015 Weather: Cloudy. High of 70 degrees Fahrenheit Distance: N/A Surviving one’s first proper camping trip requires pancakes for breakfast and that’s just what we whipped up before getting on the road back to Ithaca.

It gives me a chance to hear what worked well and what didn’t and gives me perspective – sometimes wildly varying – on what people tookContinue reading “Postscript: Favorite Memories”
Trip Report: May Georgian Bay Kayak Camping Trip
After a lovely happy birthday text last November, I received a second text: “I’d love to get back to Canada sometime and see some of these pretty places you post about. Could I convince you to take/join me on a kayak excursion in the spring?” Sure, Irene. Twist my rubber arm!
Trip Report: Partridge Creek Canoe Trip
Put five paddlers who have never paddled together – most of whom had never met – add a gorgeous spring weekend and a new-to-them route and see what pops out!
Trip Report: Algonquin Park’s Mew Lake Campground
In the middle of November, my husband and I attended a wedding for two dear friends. Doesn’t every outdoor adventure story start like this? We knew our wedding photographer friends were shooting the event and laughed as guests watched in confusion as we hugged and kissed our friends after wishing the bride and groom heartyContinue reading “Trip Report: Algonquin Park’s Mew Lake Campground”
